Completing the FPHS certainly gave us some clarity and “justification” for adding EHPS staff in our health department. We are small and only have 1 full-time EPHS. I desperately need at least one more with our county growth and the increase in complaints, food truck explosion, etc. so I asked for the addition of AT LEAST a part-time EPHS position in my budget for 2025 with the preference of a full-time.
My commission asked what rate of pay I would need to offer and I told them at a minimum $19.00/hr for part-time (no benefits) but concerned that might be too low. Well I got my approved budget today and they added a PT EPHS position at a pay rate of $13.75/hr… minimum wage!!! The fast food restaurants pay more than that for heaven’s sake and I am expected to find an adult to work as an EPHS (and you all know how knowledgeable you have to be and the strong people skills and experience need for that role) for less than teenagers make at the places they are inspecting?? I am at a total loss for words! Can you share what your EPHS pay is for your county? Am I off base?

You won’t get anyone for that amount. But if you have a part time person for basic wastewater they can take the online courses offered at Mo Southern in Joplin then that the basic WW course and be approved to do basic systems. Pam Allen at Dade County had her front desk person do that and they were approved to do basic systems. This is NOT in the EHOG but Edith Todd at SW District said that it was okay. But you still won’t be able to hire anyone at that rate. My EPHS has been with me for 21 years with only an Associates degree and he gets $24/hour plus all benefits for full time. Good Luck.

We usually start ours at $20, but that was 2 years ago.
