KeymasterDo any of the health departments restrict or refuse to allow pharmaceutical reps, including vaccine rep’s from marketing their products at their agency? We have some rep’s who overstay their welcome and just wondering if anyone else had a policy to restrict their entry to their agency? Thanks.

KeymasterWe have not. When I greet them at the front, I tell them I only have a couple of minutes, and then give them signals…..standing and heading for the door, etc. A few times, I’ve just visited with them in the waiting room or hallway. Making it uncomfortable for them sometimes works.

KeymasterLately we have turned them away by stating “Our office staff are not meeting in person with pharmaceutical reps” we do provide them with the email of our immunization nurse as an alternative way for them to share information. Lots of places have started doing this!

KeymasterSo, I am a pharmacist, and I have a HUGE problem with pharma reps. I did not allow them when I managed my hospital pharmacy. I don’t allow them any more access than dropping off printed materials. I give them a card and say they are welcome to email any product literature they have but we don’t allow pharmaceutical salespeople otherwise.
I find the practice to be profoundly unethical and I don’t indulge it. For vaccines I think it’s less of an issue. But it’s extremely bad for regular pharmaceuticals. Too bad I don’t have control over what’s going on in provider’s offices across town.

KeymasterI have had a complete turnover of nursing staff. A couple of the Reps (Sanofi and GSK) have been instrumental in assisting me with training the new nurses about different products and usage. But we set up a mutually agreed upon time and date for them to come in. If they just show up and I am busy I do the same as Joplin said above.

KeymasterWe do allow them time, sometimes. But they have to schedule an appointment and if they overstay their welcome, we tell them we need to go. If they just drop in, we usually tell the front staff to let them know we are busy and can call our Immunization Coordinator to make an appointment.
