Dollar General is remodeling and building new it seems a lot lately. Some of them now have a produce aisle. It is all pre-packaged and there is no in-store processing. Question: is anyone out there requiring a hand sink or any other extra plumbing because of this? They do probably touch whole cucumbers and green peppers with hands when stocking the shelves.

    Tom,

I hope you’re doing well since we haven’t seen each other in a while. I had one of my DG locations that did the remodel with the produce merchandiser.

The problem that I have with DG is them constructing a new location or doing the remodel and NOT contacting our office for a food establishment plan review. We didn’t even know that it was done until a month after the fact. So to answer your question, no new plumbing was added to the facility.

Whether or not an additional handwashing station is added to the building for employee use, once produce is put in a merchandiser anybody can and will touch it before it is sold. Ultimately, the end purchaser should consider any unpackaged produce to be clean or dirty and use their discretion whether to clean it or not.
